Common supplements are vitamins, minerals, and herbal products, also known as botanicals. People take these supplements to make sure they get enough essential nutrients and to maintain or improve their health. There is a positive trend in supplement use with age and a higher prevalence of reported use of dietary supplements for site-specific reasons, such as heart, eyes, and joints and bones. Older adults (≥ 60 years old) are more likely than younger people to report motivations related to site-specific reasons, such as heart, bone and eye health.
The motivations were also evaluated by means of a categorical question that included the reasons for the use of each supplement reported using a manual card with a list of possible reasons. The most common reasons for using supplements are to “improve” (45%) or “maintain” (33%) overall health. Participants were also asked if they had used the supplement for their own reasons or on the advice of a healthcare provider. The next most common reason was “bone health” (25%), and it was significantly more common among women (36%) than among men (11%).
Adults reported that they were motivated by organ-specific health reasons less frequently than the reasons mentioned in this document (for example, heart health, joints, colon and intestine, skin and eye health).
